BioSmart guarantees improvements in the WWTP in Cacia

News date: 25 January 2022

BioSmart secured the adjudication of the public procedure of Águas do Centro Litoral with the object of “Supply and Installation of Dehydrated Sludge Silo Cover in the WWTP of Cacia”.

The services provided, in a contract lasting 90 days, have as their main purpose the supply, by the successful tenderer, of a cover in a light steel metallic structure to be placed over the dehydrated sludge silo at the WWTP in Cacia.

According to information on the Águas do Centro Litoral website, the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Cacia receives and treats effluents from the municipalities of Águeda, Albergaria-a-Velha, Aveiro, Estarreja, Murtosa, Oliveira do Bairro, Ovar and Santa Maria da Feira.

Still according to the same website, the WWTP in Cacia is prepared to receive the domestic effluents of 272 thousand inhabitants-equivalent and treat around 48,700 m3/day of liquid effluents.

The treatment solution for this WWTP is based on a secondary treatment system, adopting a biological treatment process based on an activated sludge system with prolonged aeration, with removal of organic matter. Through physical and biological processes, solid waste and dissolved organic matter are removed from the water. Subsequently, the organic by-products resulting from the treatment of wastewater are subject to treatment, with a view to reducing their volume and producing biogas.

The sewage sludge produced at the WWTP is thickened and dehydrated, and then temporarily stored in the silo targeted by this intervention, until it is collected by licensed operators and sent for temporary storage or for direct recovery through composting, before being applied to agricultural soils.
