Provision of services at the Water Treatment Plant of Minas

News date: 22 October 2020

In June of 2020, BioSmart started providing water decontamination services in the mining areas of radioactive substances to Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro, S.A. (EDM), for a period of two years.

The covered infrastructures in these service provisions are the Urgeiriça WTP in the municipality of Nelas, Quinta do Bispo, Cunha Baixa and Freixiosa in the municipality of Mangualde, Vale da Abrutiga in the municipality of Tábua, Castelejo in the municipality of Gouveia, Bica and Vale D’Arca in the municipality of Sabugal.

These water treatment plants treat contaminated exsurgencies from old mining areas, where water treatment and monitoring are developed in order to guarantee its health, thus obtaining the recovery and environmental valorization of the effluents from the previous mines, which go to bordering water lines. Between 2017 and 2020, BioSmart in a consortium, developed similar service provisions in these facilities, now carrying out this contract autonomously for EDM, which covers new maintenance services including the improvement of sludge dewatering at the Urgeiriça WTP and the operation of the new Quinta do Bispo WTP.

For the development of the services for this contract, BioSmart has a technical department that coordinates the work and three technicians who permanently carry out the operation and maintenance plans of the facilities. Other specific maintenance work is carried out by technicians from BioSmart and Grupo NOV.
